Generation No. 1

1. ADAM1 HOPE was born 1787 in TN, and died 1831 in Blount Co. TN. He married MARY CARSON Apr 24, 1824 in Washington Co. TN, daughter of ROBERT CARSON and MARY DUNCAN.

In Josephine Jurney's Hope Spring Eternal, she places ADAM1 as the son of Adam and Rachel Wallis. After further review, this may not be correct. Another source recently has placed him as the son of Samuel and Deborah Beatty of York Co. SC, Rutherford Co. NC, & Greene Co. TN. This line makes more sense. Greene Co. is the next Co. over from Washington Co.,where ADAM1 was married. Adam & Rachel were living in Davidson Co. as early as 1789, where they also died. Blount Co., which is also the home of Robert Carson, is just down the line from Greene Co..According to the second source, there was an Adam that was on the Tax list in Greene co. and one that was called for Jury duty in 1832 but was found to be no longer living. Is this ADAM1? Samuel had 8 children all born in NC including Adam, Beatty, John & James. According to family tradition ADAM1 had a brother who was wounded in the war of 1812 and died soon after. On January 26, 1818, Samuel Hope gave a deposition concerning the heirs of John Hope, his son, who was wounded in the war of 1812, and who died on October 14, 1814 in Greene Co. TN. Listed are his brothers and sisters since he was not married.

According to my Grandmother, Margery Frances Day Hanson, specifically in her book Receipt For An Inheritance, Adam came to Blount Co. soon after he was married in 1824 and owned a small farm and maybe a mill. He died in 1831 and Mary in 1834. James Beatty Hope was legally bound out until he was 21 by a family named Humphrey; a common family name in Blount Co.

From "Reciept for an Inheritance"

"The records of Esther Hope daughter of William Alexander Hope, gave me the only clue to the life of Gorsuch family. This clue was:--Andrew Gorsuch was buried at Eureka, Greenwood Co. KS. He married Matilda Jane Moore who died October 17, 1876. His Mother, Mary Jane Gorsuch, lived with his sister Margaret Powell and died in her 80's about 1910.

Following up this clue I wrote to the Eureka Herald to request iinformation from anyone who might know of Andrew Gorsuch. I recieved letters from three women who, because their grandmother was a sister of Matilda Jane Moore, wife of Andrew Gorsuch, were able to give helpful data. They are: Geneva Thome of Baldwin Park CA and Severy, KS; Alberta Smith (Mrs. Carl) of Glendora, CA and Norma Harris Hutchinson (Mrs. Roy) of Shawnee Mission, KS.

These three woman remember hearing of their Uncle Andy Gorsuch from their mothers, and know quite a bit about the moving around of the Moore family with whom the Gorsuches were closely associated. With this data we conjecture that the Gorsuches moved to Iowa about the same time as the James Beatty Hopes. they were probably in Washington Co. Iowa and certainly in Louisa Co., because we have the record of Andrew's induction into the army, from the Roster and Record of Iowa Soldiers, Vol 3, 1910, p. 951 - Twenty-fifth Infantry, Company "I":

Gorsuch, Andrew F., age 18 Residence Louisa, nativity, Tennessee, enlisted February 19, 1864. Mustered March 4, 1864. Transferred to Company B. Ninth Infantry.

The Gorsuches went to Appanoose Co. with the Moores and moved with them across the border into Putnam County, Missouri at Unionville, where Andrew and Matilda Jane, "Jennie", were married around 1869. They had no children. Andrew and Jennie came on to Kansas and settled near Eureka, where they are buried. Andrew was a member of post 50 of G.A.R.

Some evidence that the entire Gorsuch family settled in this part of Kansas comes from the fact that a George Gorsuch, probably the brother of Andrew, died in his early 20's and is buried in the very old Garrison Cemetery at Hamilton, also in Greenwood Co. 40 miles south of Emporia. Further evidence comes from Mrs. Edna Moss Essick of Hesston, Kansas, whose grandfather, Nathan Moss married Mary Lorina Gorsuch as his second wife. Their only son died at the age of 16 and is buried in the old cemetery at Hamilton. She says that Mary Lorina Gorsuch Moss died in Missouri."

Rachel Melcina3 GORSUCH (Mary Jane2 HOPE, ADAM1) was born Nov 21, 1856, and died Dec 16, 1885. She married George Franklin Snook Jan 20, 1880, son of Joseph Snook and Mary Henri.

Children of Rachel GORSUCH and George Snook are:

  1. Mary Matilda4 SNOOK, born Nov 08, 1880; died Feb 22, 1960 in Silvis, IL.
  2. Leah Luella SNOOK, born Feb 18, 1883; died in of Ovid, CO.

3. Major JAMES BEATTY2 HOPE (ADAM1) was born Jun 06, 1828 in Blount Co. TN, and died Oct 22, 1889 in Lecompton, KS. He married MARGARET ADALINE FERGUSON (Picture of) Feb 26, 1850 in Blount Co. TN, daughter of ANDREW FERGUSON and SUSAN CARSON.

James Beatty secured his release from the Humphreys by enlisting in the Mexican War when he was 19. He joined the 5th Regiment of Tennessee Foot Volunteers, organized at Maryville in 1847. He was with General Winfield Scott at Vera Cruz and at the taking of Mexico City. He was discharged in July 1848. In 1851-52, James Beatty, his family, and several Ferguson families moved to Washington Co. IA near Crawfordsville. James Beatty volunteered and was mustered into the Union Army, July 24 1861 at Burlington, IA, as first sergeant of Company H, in the 7th Regiment.

From an application to return to service 1864:

"...I was engaged at the battle at Bellmont, Missouri on the 7th of November 1861;wounded through the bone of the face, just below the right eye; also a slight wound in the left heel by a musketball, and was taken prisoner by the rebels and was exchanged for on the 12th November, 1861. I was in and took part in the battle of Ft. Donaldson, Feb 13-15 1862; was promoted and commissioned as Second Lieutenant on the 13th of March, 1862; was in the battle of Shilo on the 6th and 7th of April 1862; was engaged in the battle of Corinth on the 3rd and 4th of October, 1862; was shot through the left shoulder and wounded in the left hand; was promoted to and commissioned as Captain November 11, 1862; all of which service was performed while belonging to Co. H, 7th Iowa Infantry Volunteers..."

He took sick on January 1863 and was discharged on April 3, 1863. He returned to service in May 1864 and was honorably discharged as a Major in September of the same year. In 1869, the Hopes moved to Labette County KS near Oswego. They moved to Chautauqua Co. near Elgin in 1872. The family moved again, in 1873, to Sterling Rice Co. and then to Lecompton in 1883.
